Our Policies 

Only qualified homes are eligible to purchase Oriental Shorthair kittens. Adopters of Oriental Shorthair kittens must sign a contract that adheres to a few basic guidelines for their Oriental Shorthair's health and safety. Oriental Shorthairs should only be kept indoors or in a safe outdoor play area. DECLAWING IS NOT PERMITTED here. If at any moment you are unable to care for your Oriental Shorthair for any reason, you must return the kitten to Oriental Shorthair Abbey OR get written permission from us for a change in ownership if you wish to rehome it to a friend. We ALWAYS need to approve a potential new home and know where our Oriental Shorthairs are, but if an Oriental Shorthair needs to be rehomed, the present owners typically know the most about the animal's personality and what kind of home would be ideal. Our oriental shorthairs should never be at danger of becoming homeless or living in a shelter. Unless they are sold as show or breeding cats, all Oriental Shorthairs are spayed or neutered before being placed in new homes.

Health Guarantee

Our guarantees to you, such as our health guarantee, are also included in our contract!  We provide a three-year warranty against both congenital abnormalities and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Every 9 to 15 months, our breeding cats are checked for HCM, tested for FIV/FeLV, and had their DNA examined using Optimal Selection Genoscoper testing to make sure we do not generate kittens with PKDef or PRAb. Please make sure the cattery you want to buy from checks for the aforementioned disorders! PRAb-affected kittens are perfectly normal until they begin to go blind around the age of two or three, although many breeders have "never had an issue" with PRAb screening. PKDef is a blood condition that does not exhibit any symptoms in kittens, but by the time they are four years old, it can cause severe anemia, organ failure, or even death. Oriental Shorthair Breeders have no justification for failing to take the test to stop these horrible illnesses! It only requires a straightforward mouth swab DNA test, which costs between $80 and $100 per cat and is mailed!
